Share Your Story

StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, creating a growing portrait of who we really are as Americans. The shared goal of the National September 11 Memorial Museum’s partnership with StoryCorps is to record at least one remembrance for each of the victims of the terrorist attacks on February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001, as well as the narratives from survivors, rescue workers, witnesses, service providers and other such persons impacted by these events in order to preserve their extraordinary personal experiences. In addition to being deposited at the Library of Congress, these 9/11 remembrances will be preserved in perpetuity as part of the National September 11 Memorial Museum’s permanent collection. Over time, this expanding archive will serve as a core resource for the Museum’s exhibitions, commemorative programs, its planned digital resource center, and future educational programs.

Interviews are conducted in a conversational format, typically between two people who know one another. In the context of the 9/11 StoryCorps Initiative, they tell one another stories and share memories about a particular individual who perished as a result of the attacks of September 11, 2001 or February 26, 1993. Participants engaging in these remembrance interviews can be family members, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and/or rescue and recovery workers. The resulting 40-minute "narrative” interview can provide intimate perspectives on the life and character of each person perpetuating his or her individuality while affirming our common humanity. Each recording session will yield a courtesy CD for you to take home and share, with all production fees waived for 9/11 family members.

Families and survivors describe their StoryCorps session as a loving and supportive way to celebrate life. It’s easy to record an interview.  When you arrive at the StoryBooth, a trained StoryCorps facilitator will explain the process, make you feel comfortable, and sit with you during your 40-minute session.  Memorial Museum staff members are also available to meet you and help guide you through the interview.

Foley Square is located above City Hall Park in downtown Manhattan on Centre Street between Duane and Worth streets, across from the U.S. Courthouse.

Public Transportation
Subway: Take the 4, 5, or 6 line to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. Take the 1, 2,
3, J, M, or Z line to Chambers Street. Take the R or W line to City
Hall.
Bus: Take the M1, M6, M15, M22, M103, or the B51 to City Hall.

Parking Garage
Nearest parking is located on Worth St. between Broadway and Lafayette available through Icon Parking.

StoryCorps offers a few ways to record your story without coming to the New York area:

Rent a StoryKit
StoryCorps offers a limited number of portable recording equipment packages available for rent through their StoryKit program. These packages accommodate 1-4 individual interviews of 40 minutes each.  Interviews are recorded on StoryCorps’ special equipment, and will be issued to you in CD form.  For more information on the StoryKit program, click here.
